Only rode to work once on these, but I could tell how much the studs gripped the otherwise treacherous icy hills. I just bombed down them without a fret. I tested the brakes without issue. If you want to ride single track and use them for high speed corners, you should get the more expensive tires with studs on the sides as well. Otherwise for commuting these will be the better choice.I realized that I could continue bike commuting since the backroads will be plowed and as long as it isn't a blizzard with inches if snow, I should be able to ride twice a week or more.The 26 inch sized tire was fairly easy to put on. The tire side wall is probably thicker than other tires, which might have made it slightly stiffer, but the bead was large enough that it wasn't hard to push it over the rim.Update: I have loved commuting with these on ice and snow. I even tried snow covered single track. They worked great. The tread pattern works well on the snow.
